Little Basic Training, Much Old-Age Regretting

Of the basic training for all martial-arts beginners, standing meditation (or post-standing) is the number-one must. That exercise not only trains your legs; more importantly, it cultivates your mind and will.
The essence of practising martial arts is mental exercise, namely subjecting your mind and will to tough workouts. For a martial arts practitioner, it is crucial to try and keep his body and mind as tranquil as still water. Then his mind and thought, being calm and deep, can go as far as thousands of miles.
When you practise standing meditation, you ARE a tree – just imagine yourself turned into a giant tree reaching into the skies. Yet, though the tree can be thousands of feet tall, it has to rest on its roots down below. Likewise, the whole of your body and mind must be deeply rooted in the earth under your feet – the deeper they are rooted, the more advanced you’ll be as a martial artist.
In practising martial arts, one must aim at self-cultivation both physically and spiritually, seeking union with all Creation in the end. If and when that aim is attained, you’ll feel the whole of your body and mind turning into water, as it were.
From a giant tree, to water that’s found in all living things, you will have done the journey for a martial-arts practitioner to arrive at a higher stage, where you’ll feel yourself melt into water, consciously or unconsciously. Only then can the whole of your own body and mind merge with the earth under your feet. Only then can you count yourself as a member of the martial artists’ community.
